110 Ways To Be Like George Washington

I recently completed several books and articles about George Washington.  This was a great study that reminded me of the important fundamentals of character and leadership. One new thing I learned was Washington had a colossal temper.  Yet, he effectively mastered self-restraint to exercise power wisely.  He would lose his temper on occasion, but these were the exceptions to his standard gentlemanly behavior. How was he able to master his temper?  It had to do with his character – getting…See More

3 Factors For Success

Recently I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at my nephew’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor. My message was “Success as an Identity” and I covered three factors for success – Trust, Relationships and Results.  Excerpts are below. What do I mean by "Success as an Identity"?  Getting information and knowledge about success from the head to the heart.  In other words transformation – success becoming a part of who you are, your identity. Success can be defined in many different ways. …See More

Wondering and Wandering

Have you studied babies recently?  As my grandchild approaches her first birthday, it is fascinating to watch her learn and grow.  She has such a sense of wonder, intense curiosity, inquisitiveness, and an insatiable appetite for exploring new things. What happens to most of us on life’s journey?  When and why do we lose that sense of wonder and excitement?  The ability to imagine, innovate and think creatively…the ability to gently wander?  “Not all those who wander are lost.”  J.R.R.…See More

1001 Ways to Celebrate and Improve Your Bottom-Line

Two recent events reminded me of the importance of celebrating. One involved a friend whose Army son was promoted from Captain to Major. My friend beamed as he described the ceremony in great detail. He talked about how his son’s commanding officer, with great eloquence and without notes, described his son’s character and recited his accomplishments. The military knows how to celebrate and bestow honor to important events. The other event involved a friend and college professor. He described a…See More

Innovation and Creativity

Recently I had the privilege of participating in the 6th Annual Construction Product Development Exhibition at Auburn University.  Wow!  I was impressed with the students and the innovative and creative energies that were showcased. This Exhibition is a collaborative effort with Building Science, Industrial Design and industry partners such as DeWalt, Knaack and Superior Mechanical.  The students did an outstanding job - new ways of doing things, a passion for creative ideas, new syntheses of…See More

Being Brilliant at the Basics

In October, I had the privilege of speaking and participating in two conferences.  One was the Blue Ridge Conference on Leadership – http://www.blueridgeleadership.com/The other was the Third Annual Nuclear Construction Summit – http://www.nuclearenergyinsider.com/nuclear-construction-summit/ Both provided excellent opportunities to learn and grow.  My take-a-ways…See More

Unplugged

I read an article in July entitled Sleep with your iPhone? You're not alone. The story resonated with me and I began investigating our need to be continuously connected.  My observations - whether in a manufacturing plant, dentist office, shopping mall, on the highway, university campus or at the beach - were similar.  I observed many people doing stupid things with smart-phones.A typical scenario is someone walking while focusing intently on his or her phone, totally oblivious to surroundings. …See More

Leadership, Focus and Engagement

Last week, I participated in the Construction Industry Institute’s (CII) annual conference in Chicago.  The 2011 theme was “Driving predictable business outcomes in a dynamic global market.” Two of the presentations were insightful. One presentation by Penny Manuel, an executive vice president at Southern Company, was about leading in a climate of change and she covered four main points:•       Be true to your values•       Influence the future•       Execute today•       Invest in…See More

Beyond Manufacturing

An article by Bob Lutz in The Wall Street Journal (June 11, 2011) provides valuable insights beyond manufacturing. Lutz is a 47-year career automotive industry veteran with stints at GM, BMW, Ford and Chrysler. The article prompted me to reflect on the successful application of scientific methods over the post-World War II decades. Many processes and tools (SPC, TQM, Lean, and Six Sigma, to name a few) have yielded tremendous results in manufacturing efficiency gains and industrial output. These…See More

Followership

A respected colleague and friend, Dr. Brian Landry, is researching emergent theory on Followership.  He recently asked my thoughts on this subject.  I had none, beyond the obvious that we are all followers in some capacity. There is much published information on Leadership, but relatively little regarding Followership.  A Google search reveals:Leadership – about 195,000,000 resultsFollowership – about 199,000 results The numbers are quite revealing.  As I reflect on 25+ years in industry, I…See More

Vision In Higher Education

Mark Clark’s April 8, 2011, article titled “Lean Six Sigma In Higher Education” inspired me to do some serious thinking about higher education.  Has it changed significantly in recent decades?  The short answer is no.  So then, a larger question is: how do we affect real change in higher education to drive effectiveness and efficiency?  How do we do the right things right? There are no easy answers.  It will take visionary and courageous leadership.  I am reminded of the vision principles…See More
